ABOUT OUR WINEMAKER

The family estate was founded in the late 1890s, when Emmanuel’s great-great father, a miller and farmer, planted vines after phylloxera to diversify production. Initially, the grapes were sold in bulk to private clientele. It was Emmanuel’s father, Vincent, who began estate bottling. Nearly 90 years after the inception of the vine at Ogerau, Emmanuel was born. He spent his formative years in the cellar and loved everything about his time. After high school, he studied winemaking and viticulture in Angers, and returned home to take over his family estate.

Frequently asked questions

How do you source your wines?

After many years working in the wine trade as well as living in France, we come to BOBOwith a plethora of friends and colleagues throughout the industry. Through this extensive network that we have built over the last decade, we have spent much time in France visiting many vignerons—talking, tasting and spending time in their vineyards and cellars—to find exactly the right men and women for us to collaborate with on this exciting project.

What is organic wine?

The word organic seems to get very mixed up with other words such as natural or vegan or just bad wine. We would love to clear this up for you as here at BOBO, we are championing organic farming and all the men and women who work so hard all year round to do it. In the simplest terms, organic farming means that there are no synthetic—aka man–made—chemicals used in the vineyards. This includes synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers. This means that all of these farmers have to battle the elements and often erratic weather conditions with very little help. However, the consensus remains that by farming organically their vines have been able to develop their own strength and coping mechanisms to fight against disease and weather extremes.

Does organic wine taste different?

In short, no. We would recommend reading a bit about what organic wine is (above), but like other fruits and vegetables, the way it is farmed has no negative impact on the flavour of the final wine. If anything, many winemakers talk of their wines tasting better, with more freshness, concentration and ageability.

I know all your wines are Organic but are they also Biodynamic, Vegan, or Vegetarian?

Whilst each of our wines is as a minimum organic, they all differ in whether they are biodynamic, vegan or vegetarian. Each wine has an individual page where you can find this specific information.

Do your wines contain sulphites?

Our wines do contain sulphites. This is a topic that we extensively discussed with our winemakers and we are happy to be transparent on what we uncovered with them; due to the nature of the softer pouches (as opposed to glass), there is a need for added sulphites. Sulphur is a natural bi-product of wine (so every wine has sulphur in it) but people have been adding a small dose of sulphur since Roman times. We are following suit, so as to protect the wine that each winemaker has hand-made for you and to make sure that it stays deliciously fresh for six weeks once open!

Why boxed wine?

Whilst journeying through France, we were introduced to the idea that outstanding wine could come in a box and has many advantages over bottles.

This revelation inspired us to spread the word in other countries where—let’s face it—boxed wine has a mixed reputation. So, we created BOBO, to prove that boxed wine can be chic, affordable and surpass all expectations.

BOBO

/BəʊBəʊ/: BOURGEOIS BOHEMIAN

Its time to say «au revoir» to bland, sugary boxed wines from who knows where. At Bobo Wines, we source only the finest, most delicious wines directly from organic growers across France.

At Bobo Wines, we’ve never been afraid to take risks. Everything we do goes against the grain of what people think boxed wine can be; the look, the quality, the provenance.

We champion artisans, organic and biodynamic farming. Far from resting on our laurels, we’re constantly pushing boundaries, joining in the important conversations and the movements that are redefining the world of wine.
