The box
Bag–in–box 101
Technically speaking it is a cardboard box containing a flexible bag which contracts as wine is poured from its plastic tap, preventing air entering to stay fresh for six weeks.
Boxed wine stays fresh for six weeks after it’s opened
This is a major advantage of boxed wine over bottles as the wine stays fresh for up to 6 weeks. You can enjoy a glass of wine one night and then another the next night with no worry of spoiling.
Premium, Organic, Small batch, French wine—not the cheap boxed wine we are accustomed to
In the past, the box was associated with “bulk wine” mass produced at a lower price point. At Bobo we wanted to be different and sought out all premium, organic, small batch, French wine for you to enjoy at a great value.
The best and most sustainable packaging option for our environment
In 2018—2019, the alcohol monopolies of Sweden, Finland and Norway jointly calculated the average CO2 per litre emitted in the manufacture of different forms of wine packaging. Glass bottles have by far the highest carbon impact. The footprint of cans and PET bottles (bottles made of recycled plastic salvaged) is substantially lower, but bag-in-box was proved to have the lowest emissions. The difference is bigger still if you include transportation.
The same quality as wine in a bottle
Actually all the Bobo wines you are enjoying are also available in a bottle too within France. The winemakers were excited to work with us on sustainable packaging and provide the same quality wine as from a bottle.
3 bottles in a box of BOBO
It is 2.25 Litres which is the equivalent of 3 standard bottles of wine.
Meant to drink fresh
It has a shelf life of 8—10 months and it is meant to drink fresh in the first few months. This wine is meant to drink now and not age in a cellar. Who wants to stare at a bottle for years without enjoying drinking it anyway!
Fully recyclable
Yes, all the elements of your box are recyclable. The outer cardboard box is fully recyclable throughout the UK in your standard bin, however the bag currently needs to be recycled as part of the supermarkets’ national bag recycling scheme at the store. We hope the bag will have a simpler option in the near future.
The wines
How do you source your wines?
After many years working in the wine trade as well as living in France, we come to BOBOwith a plethora of friends and colleagues throughout the industry. Through this extensive network that we have built over the last decade, we have spent much time in France visiting many vignerons—talking, tasting and spending time in their vineyards and cellars—to find exactly the right men and women for us to collaborate with on this exciting project.
What is organic wine?
The wordorganicseems to get very mixed up with other words such as natural or vegan or just bad wine. We would love to clear this up for you as here at BOBO, we are championing organic farming and all the men and women who work so hard all year round to do it. In the simplest terms, organic farming means that there are no synthetic—aka man–made—chemicals used in the vineyards. This includes synthetic herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers. This means that all of these farmers have to battle the elements and often erratic weather conditions with very little help. However, the consensus remains that by farming organically their vines have been able to develop their own strength and coping mechanisms to fight against disease and weather extremes.
Does organic wine taste different?
In short, no. We would recommend reading a bit about what organic wine is (above), but like other fruits and vegetables, the way it is farmed has no negative impact on the flavour of the final wine. If anything, many winemakers talk of their wines tasting better, with more freshness, concentration and ageability.
I know all your wines are Organic but are they also Biodynamic, Vegan, or Vegetarian?
Whilst each of our wines is as a minimum organic, they all differ in whether they are biodynamic, vegan or vegetarian. Each wine has an individual page where you can find this specific information.
Do your wines contain sulphites?
Our wines do contain sulphites. This is a topic that we extensively discussed with our winemakers and we are happy to be transparent on what we uncovered with them; due to the nature of the softer pouches (as opposed to glass), there is a need for added sulphites. Sulphur is a natural bi-product of wine (so every wine has sulphur in it) but people have been adding a small dose of sulphur since Roman times. We are following suit, so as to protect the wine that each winemaker has hand-made for you and to make sure that it stays deliciously fresh for six weeks once open!
